Me and my shadow

Do you ever ask yourself why a particular person or trait in someone irritates you so much or catch yourself reacting over-dramatically to something really quite trivial? I have come to recognise that when I do, it’s my shadow rearing its head. What I’m actually reacting to is something that I don’t like or want to admit exists within me, only it’s so much easier to see it in other people! The well known psychologist Jung used the term “shadow” to describe the parts of ourselves we dislike, sometimes to the...

The perfect year? Reading for 2009

Posted by on Jan 1, 2009 in Spiritual living, Tarot | Comments Off on The perfect year? Reading for 2009

I have a tradition of pulling a Tarot card as an overall guiding message for the world in general at the beginning of each new year. I use my beloved Thoth deck, which has some differences to the traditional Tarot but in my experience is deeply powerful and empowering. The card I’ve drawn for 2009 is Adjustment (Justice in the traditional Tarot). In shades of blue and green, it shows a woman balancing perfectly on tiptoe holding a sword point down in front of her. A large pair of scales hangs from above her head with the pans at equal...

Living in the now – puppy style!

Posted by on Nov 23, 2008 in Spiritual living | Comments Off on Living in the now – puppy style!

We’ve just got a puppy; a bundle of border collie fun called Jester who, yes, is living up to his name! As well as teaching my two sons a lot about caring and responsibility, the little chap has also been emphasising another life lesson for me – the importance of living in the present moment. The past few months have been tricky for me which is always a sign that I’m doing a lot of growing and developing. But what I’ve come to realise is how much we sideline where we are, what’s going on immediately around us,...

Once upon a time – the power of story

Posted by on Sep 22, 2008 in Spiritual living | Comments Off on Once upon a time – the power of story

I recently heard a piece on the radio talking about the decline in the number of parents reading stories to their children, and I thought what a great shame that is. I have really fond memories of bedtime sessions with my two sons, bringing the Harry Potter (among others) books to life with my silly accents and crazy facial expressions. I have to confess I wasn’t sure who was enjoying it more in the end; them or me! If you prefer to listen to a spoken version of this article, including some further thoughts on its themes, play the video...

Creativity requires craziness

One of my favourite films is Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner. In it, he plays a struggling farmer who follows otherworldly inspiration and builds a baseball pitch on his corn field because, he is told, “If you build it they will come”. And you know what? They do, but not before everyone around him thinks he’s gone completely mad. The thing is, he honours his creative inspiration, he makes the space into which his dream can grow and manifest, despite his friends, family and colleagues telling him he’s lost the...

The change challenge

Posted by on Jul 25, 2008 in Spiritual living | Comments Off on The change challenge

Having written recently about feeling like I was in a period of waiting, I now find myself in a time of intense change – that’ll teach me! This time round, it’s a new relationship which has come as an unexpected but extremely welcome blessing. As we’re adjusting to each other, we’re inevitably coming across areas where he (I’ve promised not to name him!) has challenged or questioned me on the way I do things. It’s amazing how a fresh pair of eyes can make you see things in a completely new light, and...

Dark side of the moon – reading for 2007

Posted by on Jan 1, 2007 in Spiritual living, Tarot | Comments Off on Dark side of the moon – reading for 2007

For the first post of 2007 I thought it would be nice to draw a Tarot card as a message and inspiration for this new year – the card I drew was The Moon. The Moon is a mysterious card, associated with the dark and feminine realms of the soul, the unconscious and the psychic – which is why I chose to call my company Triple Moon (I didn’t fix the draw and shuffled really well, promise!). So, it seems that 2007 is a good year for all of us to get in touch with those hidden aspects of ourselves that some of us can actually find...
