This chakra, as its name suggests, is situated in the solar plexus, over the adrenal glands. Related to the fire element, the solar plexus chakra rules our metabolism and therefore the digestive system which pays a major part in the metabolic process. Its fiery energy brings us light, warmth, energy and power – it’s our ‘get up and go’ and will centre – and so it’s here also that we feel the lack of those things (such as butterflies when we’re nervous).

Related to the water element, the sacral chakra corresponds to all the bodily functions associated with liquid, including blood circulation, urination, sexuality and reproduction. It also governs all the qualities of water, like flow, fluidity and surrender. This chakra is the centre of sexuality and also the feminine qualities of emotions, sensation, pleasure, movement and nurture.

Related to the earth element, the base chakra is concerned with all your earth-bound needs, such as your body, health, wealth, security and survival. This is where you get your sense of being grounded, connected to the earth and stable.

The subtle body is the non-physical psychic body that is superimposed on our physical bodies. These energy centres, called chakras, are seen as spinning discs which act as generators, receiving, assimilating and transmitting life energy into the body from external sources (such as the environment, and universal, multidimensional sources).
