Soulful activism: The courage to feel it all

Soulfful activism; The courage to feel it all

Stillness can feel unbearable. Facing what we’re actually feeling or hearing in the moment feels like too much. But when we avoid it, we miss the truth waiting just beneath the surface – the pain, the sorrow, the fear of uncertainty. And yet, that’s exactly where healing, and soulful activism, begins.

So much of today’s human suffering stems from our resistance to sitting with discomfort. You can see it everywhere in the constant push toward the next high, the next achievement, the next distraction. It shows up in the rage and vicious backlash when someone’s beliefs are questioned or contradicted.

In 2016, these same questions were stirring in me and I gave them voice in a poem inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

One step at a time; spiritual walking practice

A couple of weeks ago, my partner, our collie companion, and I set off on a ten-day walking holiday, each day unfolding spontaneously from the base of our camper van. The deep restoration we felt – body, heart, and spirit – moved me to write this reflection on a spiritual walking practice.

I walk, and my body sings. There’s a rhythm in my hips, a primal pulse rising up from my feet. Step by step, I fall into the ancient poetry of motion – one foot, then the other, again and again. It soothes. It centres. It returns me to myself.

About a year ago, my partner George discovered he had ADHD. This new knowledge was both a relief and a challenge. It opened up a whole new perspective on the sticky patches in our relationship we kept cycling around. It meant I could let go of a lot of painful assumptions I’d been making about how he felt about me. And it meant I had to choose to recommit to this new relationship where I knew exactly what I was letting myself in for.

Coping with uncertainty

As we’re in such unsettled and changing times, I thought I’d share my top tips for coping with uncertainty using spiritual and healing practices. These are very general and will be of benefit to everyone. However, they don’t address specific issues such as acute anxiety or depression, so you might want to seek additional advice from experts in these areas if necessary.

Practices for coping with uncertainty

Nurture gratitude: Gratitude has one of the highest emotional vibrations, and in my experience it often opens you up and leads you effortlessly into feeling a kind of joy.

Who you are; a poem by Semele Xerri
Awakening by Marco Braun

I wrote Who you are on April 5th 2023 – the eve of the full moon in Libra. I wasn’t conscious while writing of how appropriate it was for that particular moon and the astrology surrounding it, but I’m never surprised by where my inner knowing takes me. The Sun conjunct Chiron opposite that moon offered potent healing energy for the kind of wounding described here, common to many. The experience itself happened many years ago, but its vivid memory sustains me still. It’s a poem for any time, and for anyone walking the spiritual path…
