Dream work; a poem by Semele Xerri

This poem plays on the idea of dream work as a vocational profession, and the fact that as souls unlimited by time and space we also carry out real and valuable work in dreamtime – literal dream work. For me, both dreams turned out also to be prophetic. The first told me about my calling to spirit release and the second to being a way-shower, empowering others in navigating challenges and creating a more beautiful life and world for themselves and others.

Dream Work

The struggling line of spirits stretches out as far
As I can see from my high window above
A dry and dusty landscape. I turn and reach
The courtyard just as the first transparent traveller
Sinks to the earth, utterly spent.
My arms reach out to hold their phantom frailty
As I drop to my knees, cradling a drooping head
Upon my lap, murmuring soothing sounds of
Comfort, shelter found, and rest.
Others stream incessant through the narrow gap
To spill around us an incorporeal sea.
Urgently I wade between the beached souls,
Administering solace where I can;
A sip of recognition and the swallow of release.
So many lost and circling in the lifeless in between;
So few perceive to serve this over-taking.
I can, I will, I guide.

Next I smile at passing faces, glimmers of hope
To fleck the dense debility as still
They come, snaking slowly up the steep slopes
To the mountain meadow where I stand,
A finger pointed toward the future, a hand
Stretched back to tug them forward.
Further up the mortal line a ballad
Backdrifts on the air, as hearts and voices near me
Lift to sing, softly first and then with rising volume.
Bodies matching rhythm now, they lengthen stride
Unified in creational chorus;
Sounding into being the beginning of
A flourishing new world.
