I wrote Who you are on April 5th 2023 – the eve of the full moon in Libra. I wasn’t conscious while writing of how appropriate it was for that particular moon and the astrology surrounding it, but I’m never surprised by where my inner knowing takes me. The Sun conjunct Chiron opposite that moon offered potent healing energy for the kind of wounding described here, common to many. The experience itself happened many years ago, but its vivid memory sustains me still. It’s a poem for any time, and for anyone walking the spiritual path…
Who you are
When the work is long and hard, and failure
Shoves splintered self-esteem deep beneath your skin,
Pricking constantly with spite,
Know then; it is not all you are.
And if you wound a love with some careless callous point
Fired from your aimless angry mouth;
Tsunami of self-loathing.
Know then; it is not all you are.
Those moments when you watch your beauty flash across
A hopeful midnight sky, at once be-shadowed
By another’s blazing comet trail,
Know then; it is not all you are.
Because you ask so much of your humanity, you fear
You’ll never know the fullness of your soul
Budding through the hard-packed earth,
Know now; it is not all you are.
How can I claim this? You are wise to ask.
One night in meditation, my inner vision sees
A glow ignite beneath my heart, white-gold warm and clear.
And beams burst through my ribcage bars to
Free and fill the space around me with such light
I cannot breathe, my eyes suffuse with tears.
I wonder at the boundless love and pristine purity
Pouring forth from Source, so grateful for the grace that
Holds no judgement, finds no fault with me; and
A voice speaks soft but sure an unconditional truth
Thrumming through the skin of body’s drum,
“This is who You are.”
The dark, you see, is radiance veiled, and by
Your loving contact with its dim and dull remembrance
The wound is healed, and consciousness restored.
Sun unites with moon and in the shatter of illusion,
Illumination spirals into sovereign freedom, unity.
Heart-mind blended, Spirited;
This is who You are.
