The Tower Tarot card
For me, this is the card that speaks most eloquently of a spiritual breakthrough, a sudden revelation that changes dramatically the way you look at the world and how you live in it. Like a bolt from the blue, a new and dramatic insight blasts away all the carefully constructed beliefs and concepts that restrict the free expression of your soul.
Usually, this moment comes when you have been receiving subtle hints from Spirit that something needs to change because it’s not allowing you to grow in the most expansive way. If you have resisted or choosen to ignore these hints, because what is being questioned threatens your security and comfort, then the universe will enforce the change anyway. For that reason the Tower can be shocking and painful on a human level as your rigid ego gets shaken to the core. You must now trust that all is working for your highest good at all times.
Perhaps a beloved spiritual teacher has toppled from their pedestal and revealed their frailty, a partner tells you they’re leaving you out of the blue, your landlord asks you to move out, or a secure job is unexpectedly lost. Alternatively, a truth may be revealed to you in meditation or in a dream which challenges all your preconceptions. Whatever the situation, you’re being asked to see things through the eye of your awakened consciousness, as they really are.
Be understanding, gentle and compassionate with yourself and others as you allow the rubble to settle around you. When it does, you’ll see that what you’re left with are the foundations on which you can build a much healthier and stronger spiritual life, more in line with the needs of your soul.
Embrace even the most upsetting and unsettling of experiences and losses, because ultimately they’re moving you towards greater spiritual growth and freedom. The Tower moment was perfectly illustrated in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Eat, Pray, Love, when the heroine finds herself sobbing on the floor of her bathroom feeling lost and desperately unhappy. That moment of despair led to her finding, eventually, a life of meaning and a true soul partner to share it with.
