Unprocessed emotions – those you suppress, deny, or hide – don’t simply disappear. They stay lodged in the physical and subtle energy bodies, often settling into the tissues, muscles, or organs. Over time, this emotional stagnation can manifest as physical discomfort, chronic tension, or even illness.
Modern somatic wisdom and ancient spiritual teachings agree: emotions are energy in motion. If you don’t allow them to move, they become stuck. The most powerful way to clear these energies is not to analyse or suppress them, but to feel them fully and allow the body to release them in its own natural rhythm.
Here’s a simple, grounded practice to support that release.
The practice
Sit or lie down comfortably with your spine as straight as possible. Let this be a sacred space where you won’t be disturbed for 15–20 minutes.
Tune in to your body
If you feel tension or discomfort in a specific area – often the stomach, heart, throat, or bladder – place your hands gently over it. If you’re unsure, place your hands over your sacral chakra (the womb or hara, just below your navel), a key emotional centre.
Begin to breathe deeply
Allow your breath to slow and lengthen until it finds a natural, soothing rhythm. Let your inhale gently open the body, and let the exhale soften any tension.
Breathe into the area
Imagine your breath moving directly into the place where your hands are. Invite your awareness to rest there, as if you’re listening from the inside.
Ask gently for release
With compassion, ask your body to reveal and release any stuck or hidden emotion held in that area. You might feel waves of sadness, anger, fear, or grief. Memories may surface. You might cry, shake, feel heat, or even want to make sound. This is energy moving. Let it move without judgement.
Stay present and breathe
Continue breathing deeply into the area. With each exhale, imagine the emotion flowing out of your body; through your breath, your skin, your energy field. You might visualise it as smoke, light, or colour leaving your system.
Ground and complete
When the emotion feels released or has softened, bring your awareness down to your feet, your legs, and your connection to the Earth. Imagine roots anchoring you deep into the ground. Give thanks to your body and breath for supporting your healing.
A few notes
You don’t need to understand the origin of the emotion for this to work. Trust what arises.
This process is safe and natural, but if trauma surfaces and feels overwhelming, pause and return when you’re supported. You may also wish to work with a guide, healer, or therapist who has trauma awareness..
Repeat the practice as needed; daily, weekly, or intuitively, especially during emotionally intense times.
When you allow yourself to feel fully, you create space for healing, clarity, and soul-led action. That’s where true transformation begins.
