The soul journey through the Thoth tarot cards: The Emperor

Thoth Emperor Tarot cardContinuing my journey through the spiritual development meaning of Tarot cards, specifically the major arcana of the Thoth deck, we reach number 4…..

The Emperor Tarot card

Once you have learned to work with love and your intuition, it’s important to know how to create something practical and effective with them, how to build something real and lasting in the world as this is one of the cards that represents the sacred masculine. The Emperor is the form and action to the Empress‘ inspiration and raw potential.

Discipline is vital to a healthy spiritual life, setting time aside for regular meditation or exercise for example, and so now you must learn to set certain boundaries and structures for yourself within which you can attain your highest potential. You can have all the love and brilliant ideas in the world, but if you are too chaotic and disorganised you won’t ever get anything done, or you can become destructive. Having goals and plans as to how you can achieve them is very helpful, although you must remember to remain flexible and not be too rigid about how you want things to happen. If you become too fixed and regimented you can stifle creativity and intuition, and not allow room for the gifts of Spirit to flow.

As you did with the Empress, now is the time to look honestly at your relationship with your own father, and any patterns you notice running down the male line of your family (such as recurring illness, inability to express emotion, unreasonable expectations and so on). If there is anything that needs to be healed or cleared here, now is the time to do it so that, man or woman, you are able to accept and work with your male aspect fully.

You may now be asked to take on a position of leadership or authority over a project or others. The Emperor asks you to accept this responsibility and carry out your task with energy and confidence, while also taking care that the power doesn’t go to your head (an all too familiar story as history shows)! The ideal is to lead by example through love and service to the people in your care, so that they follow you willingly and joyfully knowing that you have their best interests at heart. Otherwise, you may resort to a bullying dictatorship where people are forced to obey your tyrannical demands through fear.

Hitler was an out of balance Emperor figure; the Christ very much a balanced one who could use authority and boldness when necessary, as with the money-changers in the temple, but who lived to serve his followers and was not too proud to wash their feet.
