The Empress Tarot card

Armed with the wisdom and the limitless spiritual resources learned from the Priestess, you are ready to extend unconditional love and compassion to all living beings around you as the Great Mother. You can “be” love, the greatest gift of Spirit, as this is one of the cards that represents the sacred feminine.

There are several aspects to this giving of love. The one that is most often forgotten, particularly by women, is to include yourself. This means that you recognise the importance of caring for yourself, your dreams and your own well-being on every level. If you are physically healthy, emotionally fulfilled, spiritually inspired, and mentally at peace then you are able to nurture those around you much more effectively.

You also need to look honestly at your relationship with your own mother, and any patterns you notice running down the female line of your family (such as recurring illness, low self-esteem, repression and so on). If there is anything that needs to be healed or cleared here, now is the time to do it so that, man or woman, you are able to accept and work with your feminine aspect fully.

Then there is the giving of love to others, which is self-explanatory. It is important to recognise, though, that there is such a thing as being overly caring which can slip easily into smothering. Unconditional love also bestows freedom on its recipients; there are no strings attached.

Finally, as you can see from the picture, The Empress conjures up the idea of Gaia, Mother Earth, and all the fruitful bounty she provides. So at this point in your journey you also learn to love and respect the beautiful planet on which we live, and you give back to the environment as much as you take from it with gratitude. You are very much in the world but not of it.
