The soul journey through the Thoth tarot cards: The Magus

Posted on Jul 30, 2012 in Tarot

Continuing my journey through the spiritual development meaning of Tarot cards, specifically the major arcana of the Thoth deck, we reach number 1…..

The Magus Thoth Tarot cardThe Magus Tarot card

This lesson on the soul journey is all about recognising your own skills and abilities, and being able to use them to manifest things in reality. Spiritually, the Magus asks you to understand that you are actively co-creating with the universe all the time; the power of your thoughts and the focus of your will determine what happens around you. You have all the elements necessary to achieve anything at your fingertips, you just need to be clear in your intention as you use those elements.

The Magus is literally about working magic in your life, making things happen, but the real spiritual challenge comes from determining the correct motivation. You can use your talents to help others and make the world a better place, or you can use them to manipulate others for selfish purposes such as power, money, or self-preservation. When you first become aware of the amazing energy that is at your disposal as a spiritual being, it can be tempting to try and use it for all sorts of things. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked if I can predict the winning lottery numbers, for example, or if it’s possible to make a desired person fall in love with the one who desires them!

This card has a particularly strong link with communication and the way you use that gift in relation to others. Do you ever lie? Are you a channel through which truth and divine wisdom can flow? Or do you bend or pervert the truth to suit your own ends or protect yourself?

Owning and using your power is very important, especially for those of us who need to overcome low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence. But equally as important is using personal power for the right reasons, for the greater good rather than the selfish desires of the small self (as represented by those great magicians Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series). It’s a balancing act indeed, but if you work to remain aligned with Spirit at all times then as you develop spiritually what you manifest will be Spirit-filled. That’s when real magic can happen.
