In the interconnected web of life in which I live, nothing happens in isolation. There are many threads of that web along which energy is resonating to arrive at the point at which I sit in any given moment. I am always in communication with this web and it responds to the energy I’m pulsating across it. Whether I’m sending out healing, asking a question, or making a request for help and inspiration, the message is heard and elicits a response.

So when a Blue Tit appears repeatedly and acts in ways I haven’t observed before over several days, I sit up and take notice. It began like this. Every time I settled down to a client session in my sacred space, one of these tiny birds alighted on the window sill alongside me, pausing for a while before taking flight again.
This heightened to two longer encounters, where my blue-capped messenger perched on the window sill then very deliberately turned to look into the room. Approaching the glass pane inquisitively and with intention, s/he tapped several times on it, as if trying to gain entrance. My curiosity was now really piqued.
Only hours later I was meditating in the same room when I heard a persistent tapping from outside the door. We have a window there with an inherited flap set into it, and I wondered at first if a neighbour’s cat was trying to get in. Slowly and carefully opening the door so as not to frighten it, I was astonished to see not a cat but another Blue Tit (or perhaps the same one, who knows?!) perched on the flap, busily pecking. By now I was almost incredulous. This has never happened before, and I spend a lot of time in this room so I’ve had years of opportunity to notice it.
My encounter was to intensify even further, however, and you’re probably way ahead of me by now. Yes, a Blue Tit flew right into the cottage. We’ve had one in the conservatory before as we often have the double doors open, but this one didn’t fly straight out as we’re used to. Instead, it decided to stay and explore, darting down the hall and into the kitchen before flitting up the stairs. I couldn’t help but chuckle as it passed the three little wooden birds on the stairway wall marking out the flight path. One of which is a Blue Tit!
My work room is right at the top of the stairs. Tt seemed to me that my little blue-capped friend was seeking out the energy signature there. We opened the window to allow an escape route which it took eventually, although I didn’t see it leave. Now any one or two of these I could dismiss (although if you know me at all you’ll know I dismiss nothing). But in my enchanted life this is a clear and direct message from the universe. So off to my shamanic books I went.
The Blue Tit is associated with playfulness, joy, hope, and new beginnings after adversity. You’ll find them mentioned alongside these qualities in myth, folklore, and fairy tale around the world. More recently, most of us have been enthralled and moved at least once by Judy Garland’s evocative voice in the Christmas classic “The Wizard of Oz”, singing: “Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly, (…)”if happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, oh why can’t I?” As a species Blue Tits are renowned for their curiosity, intelligence, and adaptability. This all resonated with me. Life had been more downs than ups for a few months so playfulness and joy hadn’t seemed quite so easily accessible. This little bird was telling me to lighten up, to find the simple things in life that bring happiness, and to promise that a new and brighter beginning lay ahead. I always see blue as a deeply spiritual colour, indicating divine intelligence and communication, healing, and deep peace. I welcomed all of these comforting attributes to my day, offering an extra special gift of food to my local community of Blue Tits in appreciation.
But blue birds weren’t done with me yet. Just a couple of days later while in the active whirl of housework, I found a tiny feather on the kitchen floor. I turned it over for a closer examination and saw the unmistakeable flash of bright Jay blue. I knew I had been given a Jay feather several years ago by a friend, and had found one myself in the garden also, but I hadn’t seen either of them in a long time. I’ve no idea how it got there but the recurrence of feathery blue struck me as significant, so I placed it carefully in a box on top of the bookcase.
Later that same day I was replacing a container of snacking nuts (the human not bird variety) on its shelf, when I noticed that in the very spot from which I’d just lifted the nuts container, on the recently very thoroughly cleaned and spotless kitchen countertop, was a blue Jay feather. Now this is getting bizarre, I thought, even for me who happily lives in the world of weird. It wasn’t there when I put the container down. Where on earth had it materialised from? I do possess some logic molecules believe it or not, so I returned to the bookcase immediately. But the blue Jay feather picked up from the floor earlier was still there. This was another one looking absolutely pristine, as if it had just that second been shed from the wing. Well you could have knocked me down with a (groan) feather!
So my little blue avian’s big cousin had decided to join the conversation. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a Jay close up, but they’re extraordinary. I was overawed, as if coming face to face with an ancient or mythical creature from the Otherworld. There is corresponding symbolism with its much smaller relative, such as resilience, adaptability, and hope and joy to come. But according to Ted Andrews in his book Animal Speak (https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/animal-speak-ted-andrews/820668), there is more. The Jay “has the ability to link the heavens and earth, to access each for greater power. The Jay is fearless, and it is because of this that it can help you to connect with the deepest mysteries of the earth and the greatest of the heavens.”
The caveat with this is that you have to be prepared to employ dedication and determination to mastering your knowledge and understanding of this gift. It won’t just drop into your lap like a feather from the sky; and that kind of power has to be applied to the greater good. It’s a universal law of interconnected, interdependent living.
For a few months I had been feeling a deep urge to evolve my spiritual work to reflect who I am now and the depth of wisdom I’ve worked to accumulate over many years, in a way that best serves the needs of the world and my own continued soul growth. But the more I thought about it, the less obvious it seemed how to do that. The web of life had answered my request through the most intriguing of messengers, not only pointing me in the right direction, but also hinting at the hope and joy this new approach could bring to my life.
When you’re not able to identify a clear way forward and feel like you’re blundering clueless in the dark, it can be so easy to feel alone in that space with no help to hand. Especially when you understand that this is something to which only you can really find the answer, from within yourself. But you’re never alone, if you’re prepared to open your heart to the other than human life all around you. Just gently pluck on the thread of the web of life into which you are intrinsically woven, and the answers and inspiration will surely vibrate back to you. More often than not in unexpected and surprising ways, such as a quiver of feathers.
In the days after I’d written this article, I kept seeing references by other spiritual workers to an influx of cosmic blue light on earth. Blue light is most often associated with the constellation of Orion which includes the star Sirius, and was sacred to the ancient Egyptians who aligned their pyramids to its journey across the night sky. Cosmic blue beings are also mentioned in relation to the Pleiades and to the blue avians (yes, I was amazed at that one too!) who are believed to originate from a very far distant star system. The qualities these beings bring to us are described as exactly those brought to me by Blue Tit and Jay – expansion of consciousness and understanding of our divinity, joy, peace, love, and interconnectedness. As above, so below.
That blue Jay feather is now on the altar shelf in my sacred work room. I honour and thank both birds who volunteered to encourage me with their vibrant wisdom, evoking an experience of, and trust in, the ever-present wondrous magic of small, everyday miracles.
