Yesterday I attended an excellent workshop by my friend and mine of information Nick Marchmont (see his details at the end of this post) on the Mayan culture and their calendar.
It was actually the second time I’d attended as I’d been a guinea pig for the first workshop, but it was more than worth a second hearing. The calendar is an amazingly complex and detailed journey through the year, giving anyone who chooses to use it a useful structure for any kind of project and indeed life management. Encoded within it is astonishing wisdom which we probably once understood and lived by here through our own shamanic culture but which we sorely need to get back to now.
With all the fuss about the impending December Solstice of 2012 and rumours of the end of world (which as you know by now I personally don’t go along with), it was refreshing to hear Nick explain that the Mayans saw this time as the dawning of a new age. Not the end of the world, but the end of time or rather freedom from time; when we would have the chance to choose to do things differently and not be destroyed as a result of our failings; to be at one with the universe but to remember what it was like to feel separate from it, to “choose to choose love”. The classic Mayans more than anything would have liked to be alive at this moment, so much so that they chose this moment of time as the end point from which to work out the rest of their calendar backwards.
We are so lucky to be here now, and what we do as individuals and as communities over the coming months and years will shape exactly how we experience this new age.
On a personal level you can find out what your Mayan calendar sign is. Each sign, like those in our zodiac, have personality traits and also a beautiful mantra that with some exploration and meditation can really help you move forward spiritually. For example, I am a blue galactic eagle and my mantra is:
“I harmonise to create
Modelling mind
I seal the output of vision
With the galactic tone of integrity
We are guided by the power of self-generation”
Each sign also has three other signs that support them through challenge, through support or through teaching and spiritual wisdom. I wasn’t really too surprised to find out that both my sons were red serpents and therefore both my supporters through challenge!

I thoroughly recommend Nick’s talks on the Mayan calendar, sacred geometry and other fascinating subjects and you can find out about them here:
