Continuing my journey through the spiritual development meaning of Tarot cards, specifically the major arcana of the Thoth deck, we reach number 13…..
Death Tarot card
When you have truly followed the lesson of The Hanged Man and given yourself over to allowing the Divine within you, Death comes quickly as a result. But this is not the death we all know and often fear, but rather a letting go of the old so that the new you can be born; it’s a transformation.
Spiritually, this card indicates that you have moved further away from the ego and are ready to rise to a level of being that is closer to your true soul nature. Inevitably this will mean that you may not be able to continue doing certain things that no longer resonate with your spiritual vibration. This could be anything from giving up smoking or eating meat through to relocating to a completely different environment. You are ready and willing to let of all that does not serve your higher purpose.
This is when it’s vital to understand and live in harmony with the eternal cyle of life, death and rebirth. Just as in nature, you realise that nothing ever stays the same forever but that once anything has reached fruition it dies away, offering up its energy to fuel the next cycle. As such, every ending carries within it the seed of a new beginning and so letting go becomes easy, even a joy. You welcome and are at home with the process of change.
When the Death card shows up for you, you’re being faced with an inevitable transition. Ask yourself if you have any attachment or fear of loss regarding anyone or anything in your life at this time? If so, understand that holding on only limits your soul expression and restricts your freedom to flow with the divine. Trust that whatever you let go of will be replaced by someone or something new (a transformation, not a loss), and know that it brings the best possible growth opportunities for your soul.
Embracing the transience of life, the inevitability of change in all things, helps you to view your own impermanence on this planet without fear. Death, a fact which we must all come to terms with as we inhabit these human bodies, comes to all those we love and to us eventually. When you have the certainty that death of the body is simply a transformation into a new way of being, a knowing that when the time is right you will return, death is seen as an adventure and a progression rather than a tragedy and an end.
At this time you may want to explore reincarnation and your past lives through meditation or regression, experiencing and integrating the life / death / rebirth patterns in your own soul journey. Perhaps you’re drawn to developing mediumship skills, communicating with those who are on the other side of the veil. You may even feel that you’d like to help people prepare for and manage the bodily transition of death, adopting the role of soul midwife or psychopomp.
“After the flame, a pause,
After the pain, rebirth.
Obeying nature’s laws
The phoenix goes to earth.”
From the poem “The Phoenix Again” by May Sarton
