A life that is free – reading for 2011

Posted on Jan 4, 2011 in Spiritual living, Tarot

The card drawn from my Thoth deck to guide us in 2011 is the ten of wands, and immediately I’m aware that we have moved from a nine in the 2010 reading to the number ten; completing a cycle. The card has a bright orange background against which are set eight criss-crossed wands, dominated by two much larger black wands standing upright in front of them as if to bar the way.

Given the current political and economic situation, the subtitle of this card “Oppression”  seems particularly apt but it is not a card of doom and resignation.

Life without limits – planning flexibly

Posted on Nov 1, 2010 in Spiritual living

As I continue to formulate some long-term and very exciting plans for the future, I have been very aware of how much I can automatically limit myself and the potential outcome of any situation. I have recently returned from a wonderfully relaxing holiday on the lovely island of Malta. This was my third visit and one of my most vivid memories of my last trip eight years ago was of spectacular thunder and lightning storms. I was lucky enough to be treated to a couple more on my recent visit, and we got some wonderful video footage which may appear on Youtube at some point courtesy of my son.

Playing with the law of opposites

I am currently playing Olivia in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and was commenting to another member of the cast after the last performance what stark contrasts there are within the plot: we are shown the very heights of human capability in love, generosity and service at one end of the spectrum and the very depths of it in mean-ness, selfishness and cruelty at the other. So one minute the audience is captivated by Olivia and Viola expressing love with eloquent rapture, and the next they are laughing (perhaps a little guiltily) at the ruthless and systematic humiliation of the pompous Malvolio. We even have the ultimate opposites in the male/female twins of Sebastian and Viola.

The universal pulse

Posted on Aug 5, 2010 in Spiritual living

Many years ago as a small child, I would lie awake at night with the covers pulled tight over my head. Behind my eyes brightly coloured geometric shapes twisted and danced, morphing into one another, while in my ears beat a steady rhythmic pulse which was so strong it seemed to vibrate my whole body. It felt like my own heartbeat and at the same time not.   I imagined some giant presence stomping towards me through the dark in time to the rhythm and it terrified me.
