What the alder said

Posted on Jul 25, 2017 in Poetry

What the alder saidI’ve always envisaged this poem as a children’s picture book. Maybe it will be one day…

“Let’s visit my favourite tree,” said the girl.

“Hhmph!” said the dog, through his favourite toy.

They walked their favourite path to the stream.

                                ***

“What’s it like to be a tree?” said the girl.

“Listen,” said the alder.

“Woof!” said the dog.

***

“Listen,” said the alder.

“Tell me what you know,” said the girl.

The dog found a stick.

***

“Listen,” said the alder.

“How far do your roots reach?” asked the girl.

The dog dropped the stick.

***

The sun beamed brighter.

The stream giggled and gurgled.

The breeze brushed through the leaves.

***

“Listen,” said the alder.

“Please talk to me,” said the girl.

The dog nudged the stick.

***

The sun beamed brighter.

The stream bubbled and burbled.

The girl sat down in the alder roots.

***

“Listen,” said the alder.

“I wonder what it’s like to have branches,” the girl pondered.

The dog chewed the stick.

***

The sun beamed brighter.

The stream mumbled and murmured.

The girl leaned back on the alder trunk.

***

“Listen,” said the alder.

“You feel so solid and steady,” said the girl.

The dog rested his chin on the stick.

***

The sun beamed brighter.

The stream tickled and trickled.

The girl closed her eyes.

***

“Listen,” said the alder.

The dog sighed.

The girl listened.

***

She heard the water, the birds, the wind.

She heard her breath.

She listened.

***

The girl sank back into the tree, her roots in the earth, her branches in the sky.

***

Her body felt soft and heavy.

Her heart grew warm and open.

She shone with light and life and love.

***

The sun smiled.

The stream chuckled.

The breeze blew a kiss.

***

“I hear you,” thought the girl.

“You’re welcome,” thought the alder.

“Absolutely,” thought the dog.

All as one.
