The soul journey through the Thoth tarot cards: The Devil

Thoth Devil Tarot CardContinuing my journey through the spiritual development meaning of Tarot cards, specifically the major arcana of the Thoth deck, we reach number 15…..

The Devil Tarot card

I love this card. It leads perfectly on from the Art card which taught you about acceptance and reconciling opposites, because the Devil takes you further beyond accepted morals and social judgements to embrace all of life and who you are fully and passionately. Particularly, I feel, with reference to your body and sexuality. So often in the past spirituality has urged us to deny the physical, including the body, and abstain from sexual pleasure because it’s supposedly wicked or sinful. Consequently modern society is plagued with eating disorders and sexual hangups to name but two. The Devil, however, encourages you to explore your physicality and your animal instincts; to own them, love them, and understand them.

That is the key to the Devil card – to understand and accept the lure and delights of the physical and material, but not become obsessed and therefore trapped by them. It’s only when you become possessive and acquisitive of anything (including enlightenment) that you can become frustrated and tied up with it. Enjoy by all means, but also be able to lightly let go.

As I always say, spiritual energy is of no use if it’s left floating out there in the spiritual realms. You need to bring it down here into the material world where it can truly manifest its power. So when you have absorbed this lesson of the Devil – love and respect for the world but not enslavement to it – you’re able to create from the true essence of Spirit and the fullness of who you are.

I always want to smile, too, when I look at that cheeky goat face. It’s as if he’s saying, “Don’t take your spiritual development or this human experience too seriously. Live a little, laugh a little.” I couldn’t agree more. Being ready and able to laugh at yourself means you remain humble, unattached to suffering or challenge, always ready to let go. Laughter is incredibly healing and uplifting, and it transforms dense energy instantly.

Finally, many people on a spiritual path will find themselves at some point being persecuted, condemned or abused because of their beliefs. You may even be accused of being evil or working with the powers of darkness; I know I have. So if this is happening for you now, the Devil asks you to just smile enigmatically, adjust your jaunty wreath, and carry on enjoying yourself, because you know the truth and that’s what really matters. To quote Kylie Minogue, “yes it’s true what they say – it’s better the devil you know!”

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”   Rumi
