The soul journey through the Thoth tarot cards: The Hermit

Thoth Hermit Tarot CardContinuing my journey through the spiritual development meaning of Tarot cards, specifically the major arcana of the Thoth deck, we reach number 9…..

The Hermit Tarot card

Spiritual work is no different from any other in that at times it is helpful, and even essential, to remove yourself from all the activity and distractions of the world to return more effectively to your centre, and to just “be” with nature and with Source. Whenever I see this card I am often reminded of pilgrimages, and so don’t be surprised if you feel called to journey to certain sacred sites that hold significance for your soul.

The essential message carved above the entrance to the Delphic Oracle was “know yourself”, and on the Thoth card we see the Hermit in the company of Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards the entrance to the underworld. To obtain wisdom, you must be prepared to explore your inner world, including the dark, shadowy sides of your own nature, and then tame it. Everything must be faced and dealt with so that vulnerabilities can become strengths. Often, this is a delicate process and so taking time out and away from others while you integrate and assimilate all you learn is sensible.

Once you have done this, you are able to shine the bright light of your wisdom for all to see, and this means that you may well attract followers who wish to be guided by your light. Rather than be affected or attracted by this kind of respect and even adulation, it is important to retain your focus on the inner work and to encourage others to do the same. As the Hermit, you know that the true source of all wisdom lies within each seeker, and so you teach by example of self-reliance rather than fostering dependence on you.

The Hermit does not care for the wordly pursuit of position, riches and power, and so I always advise people to expect the greatest teachers to appear in the unlikeliest of guises (a bit like the fairy godmother or magician usually makes their first appearance in the story as a poor old woman or man). At this point of your development, look around you carefully as your strange, oddball neighbour may just turn out to be an inspired spiritual master!

Similarly, you may find that certain relationships in your life are naturally dropping away as you change and evolve. There are less people who can understand and resonate with where you’re at which can make you feel rather alone and fearful. So it is important to be comfortable with what may seem like being set apart from or judged by a certain section of society, and learn to appreciate and enjoy your alone time and indeed your uniqueness, while also ensuring that you don’t become too isolated. You may have to search a little harder but I promise there are plenty more of us spiritual weird ones out there to fraternise with!
