Spring cleaning for the soul

Posted on Mar 12, 2010 in Spiritual living

At this time of year, we’re surrounded by new life and awakening energy. All over the world, the Spring Equinox (March 21 – 22) marks days and nights of equal length. Everything is perfectly balanced to bring fertility and manifestation – and nature is inviting you to do the same for your soul.

To bring the new into your life, to be happier and healthier, you need to reclaim your inner wisdom and intuition. Learn to listen, trust and then act on your intuition, rather than just your logical mind, and you’ll restore the balance to your whole self. Your inner wisdom (often called your higher self) sends messages to you through your heart, which is why so many of us ignore it as we have been taught to place more emphasis on our rational minds – our heads.

The next time you have a choice or decision to make, sit quietly for a moment and consider how you really feel about what you’re going to do. If you get a warm glow that’s open and inviting then that’s your higher self telling you that you’re on the right track. If you feel any kind of resistance, negativity or a drop in energy, if you find yourself thinking “I should” or “I have to”, then it’s obviously not the right thing for you to do. Try this just a few times and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and energy, and your shins from bruises as you kick yourself with a retrospective “I knew I shouldn’t have…….” We’ve all been there a few times!

The same rules apply for any negative thoughts that pop into your head during the day. Once you start really paying attention to them, it’s astounding how many of them you have! The next time you catch yourself thinking something like, “I always get that wrong”, stop and register just how bad that thought makes you feel. Now replace it with “How can I make sure I get this right next time?” and notice how much lighter, brighter and filled with positive energy you immediately feel.

If you’re not used to tuning into your higher self through your heart, here are a few tips for working out where a message is coming from.

A message from the head is…A message from the heart is…
Often fear-based.Love-based, makes you feel peaceful and balanced.
Quick to jump in.Often not the first message you hear.
Loud and immediate.Subtle and quiet.
About the lack of something, guilt, or a need to protect yourself from some imagined threat.Encouraging and positive.
Sometimes quite drastic and harsh.Generally gentle and simple, allowing you to take small steps at a time.
Can separate and divide.Unifies and brings together - emotions, thoughts and anxieties.
“I should”, “I have to”.“I’d love to”, “I feel drawn to.”

When you’re following your intuition consistently, you’ll notice how peaceful, calm and fairly effortless things are. Physically you’ll feel good, healthy and full of energy. I’m not promising a totally obstacle-free existence but you’ll definitely feel you’re going with the flow. If you’re permanently exhausted, feeling that you’re pushing all the time and hitting a lot of brick walls, that’s a clear signal you’re going the wrong way. Stop and take a few minutes to think about what else you’d like to do. If you don’t feel clearly that you should be doing anything then it’s perfectly alright to wait for a while until you do.

With practice, listening to your intuition becomes a natural process and you’ll find you’re clearing out the old to make way for the new every day – an ongoing spring-clean for the soul!
